Do you have anyone in your life that loves you NO MATTER WHAT? Someone that if you committed an audacious crime they would visit you in prison? Someone that would stand beside you no matter how difficult the situation? This person may or may not related to you by blood.
What could generate that type of devotion in someone? Would it be money? If it were money would you lose your devotee as soon as someone with MORE money came along? Would it be style? If it were style as soon as the times progressed a little and styles change would your fickle devotee still be with you even when you’re out of style? Would it be your performance? If it were your performance the first time your performance falters and you drop the ball when someone else picks it up and runs with it your devotee will be following the ball not you.
If you have someone who loves you NO MATTER WHAT the thing that generates that love in the person is from no where within you. That person has a divine touch and the love in the person springs up from a place the person may not even be aware of. So what does it mean to love someone unconditionally? Does it mean to give him or her anything and everything that is wanted or asked for? No it doesn’t. Loving someone like that isn’t giving them a “blank check” and saying have fun. If you love someone you mentor, lead by example, give advice when it is asked for, and sometimes loving someone is saying, “NO.” The person that loves you unconditionally is a stable rock and a fortress you can seek shelter in during any storm.
Scripture says, God is love. Any person that doesn’t have love doesn’t know God. So, what does scripture say about love?
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails
So, if God is love then what we are looking at here is a description of God’s personality. Where people get the biggest misconception of Christians (the ones that are supposed to follow Christ) is many of them try to push their own agenda and prejudices. Listen to what some Christians say and do then read Scripture to see if they match. You will not find Jesus condemning people. Jesus healed people, raised some from the dead, fed the crowds, and preached the good news to the people. The only time you see Jesus in Scripture take an outwardly aggressive action is when the religious people of the day allowed the money changers in the temple to take advantage of the people. When people stand and say, “What would Jesus do?” Well, Jesus did turn over tables and take a bull whip to people who profaned the temple and he told the religious leaders of their hypocrisies.
The religious leaders that stand with their hands folded behind them condemning those not like them maybe they should follow the example of Christ and put their garments aside and kneel to wash the feet of those they are supposed to be serving. The garments of self-righteousness, of condemnation, of looking down on those that don’t believe just like them ALL need to be laid aside to humbly serve as Christ does. Scripture says those that seek to be first shall be last and those that are last shall be first. Before you relish your position look at the position of your heart.
Now, I’ll ask, not what would Jesus do, but “What will YOU do?”
